Happy Halloween !!

I.M.O.

Found this little bird near Kwan In Temple on Tuesday. Planned to nurse it until stronger before releasing it but, ...alas, instead I sent it 'off' even faster.
Cause of its untimely death ; stampede by other birds due to my misplan.

Happy Kathina Day

Happy Kathina Day @ Mahindarama Buddhist Temple on 24Oct2010

In Pali “Kathina” literally means unshakeable or immovable. It means the merits accrued in offering Kathina Robe is unshakeable by the other small demerits (except the Five Weighty Kammas), its effect just like the great Earth or Mt. Meru cannot be be shaken by wind.

In Buddhist countries such as Sri Lanka, Thailand, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia, the annual offering of the Kathina Robe has assumed a great auspicious significance and this religious function receives even the Royal Patronage and favour.

Unlike the other meritorious deeds, the offering of Kathina Robe cannot be performed at any time, but only within 30 days i.e., from the full-moon day of October to the full-moon day of November.

Kathina Robe cannot be accepted by all monks. Only those monks who have received the Higher Ordination and observe the Vas – Rains Retreat for 3 months can accept the robe.

Vassa/Rain Retreat

Offering of flowers, candle, joss ticks and fruit juice every night.

.
If I got this right ; ie.,
In Buddha's era, during the rainy seasons, monks were unable to travel, thus they will stay in the 'kuti' and observe the Vas – Rains Retreat for 3 months, which normally started in July.

There is a nigthly chanting starting from 26Jul to 22Oct with offering of flowers and fruit juice. Try to join the chanting every weekend as I find that it is very soothing to my tired soul. But, sometimes quite disappointed when the chanting is not lead by the Chief Monk himself. You see, chanting is like singing, it requires appropriate tone and rhythm to lift one’s spirit.
